Lars Lerin is one of the Nordic region's most beloved and significant artists. With his magnificent painting and his personal storytelling, he has touched people far beyond the art world. Det Mörka Ljuset is an immersive experience that lets the audience step into Lars Lerin's inner world of light and darkness, solitude and community, longing and homecoming. A journey from his childhood Värmland to the magical light of Lofoten and onwards into the world. Through painting, life-defining encounters, personal archive material, music and his own narrative voice, a landscape emerges where memories, dreams and reality flow together. At Elverket, the room becomes part of the story in an audiovisual performance where the audience is enveloped by Lars Lerin's imagery and a story of the experiences that shaped one of the most beloved bodies of work of our time.

At Elverket, the space itself becomes part of the story in an audiovisual experience that surrounds the audience with Lars Lerin’s visual world and a narrative about the experiences that have shaped one of Sweden’s most beloved artistic voices.
Moving between drama and stillness, between light and darkness, the audience follows Lars Lerin through his art, personal memories and life-changing encounters. From his childhood in Munkfors, where a sense of alienation and the pressure to fit in begin to shape him at an early age, to the people who give him the courage to be himself.
Through a wide selection of Lars Lerin’s paintings, featuring motifs from Värmland, Lofoten, India and Iran, alongside archival material of filmed encounters and scenes from his childhood, the audience is taken on a sensory journey through memories, dreams and artistic creation. It is a story about the struggle to be who you are, about surviving through art, about longing for somewhere else and for home, and about finding beauty in the everyday and the grey. A place where darkness and light exist side by side, both in life and in art.
Through a documentary presence and dreamlike meditation, the audience is invited to inhabit memories, landscapes and emotional states where time and space merge. At its core is a search for light in the darkness. Through stories of alienation, shame, loneliness, addiction, loss and ageing, the work explores the human capacity to find meaning even in difficult times — and how light emerges most clearly against the darkest parts.
